Wamena is the capital of the district and the only town in the Baliem Valley. The res are all villages, some accessible by car and some can only be reached on foot or by chartered plane. Merpati flies from Jayapura to Wamena at least once daily. Anyway, weather condition often influence the availability of flights. In certain cases when it is difficult to have seats on Merpati Flights, you may  airfast or Trigana, cargo planes that sometimes help to take limited passengers.

A short visit to Wamema may take you to the ropehanging bridge at Sinatma, neighboring Dani villages and local market. The local market, or usually called Pasar Nayak, is the arena where the Dani tribesmen gather and sel their goods and farm products. From vegetable to pig, from firewood to stone adzes.

All those places are easily accessible from the town. For accommodations, from budget class to semi- luxurious hotels are easily available. For those who have longer or more flexible length of stay, it would be a nice experience to spend one or two nights out of town by joining the native people by staying at Dani huts n Suroba or Dugum.

Not far from Wamena, you may hire a public transport to Jiwika where you can witness a 250-year old mummified chief of the village. By two hour climbing from Jiwika, to the salt mine is another unusual performance where you can see  how the Dani women have been producing salt in primitive fashion for centuries. There are quite a lot of native villages must be reached on foot. Decide to stay overnight in Jiwika to see more? A Simple losmen and few ani huts that built for tourist are available.
