Formerly the Dani were often involved in war among tribes. Even a very simple incidents may cause a war. The most common reasons to result a war are stealing pigs and stealing womwn, usually one's wife. War was an immediate part of Dani life. Every Dani alliance was constantly war with at least one of its neighboring alliances. Almost every individual Dani was touched by war, especially people who lived at near a frontier. Every Dani had seen friends and acquaintances dead or dying from spear wounds and arrows. Most men had helped to kill an enemy in that way, and everyone had often attended fresh blood funerals.

Nowadays, there are no more wars and fights. To attract visitors, the government support a mock fighting that involves thousands of Dani men and women, on the so-called Baliem Valley Cultural Festival. This festival is held annually to maintain their culturae and way of life and keep them fighting for peace. In this event you can witness how, like in the past, a war begins. Besides mock war, they also compete in the local marathon named Baliem 10-K fun run and pig racing.
